Saturday Shout Out – Loved By Millie

loved by millie

Today’s Saturday Shout Out goes to a new to me blogger called Millie who blogs over at Loved By Millie.  Millie has been running her blog for the past 5 months (since Feb 1st!), her blog is a lifestyle blog focusing on small, independent businesses, local businesses and small shops.  I think that it is so important to support local businesses and stores, whether online or by visiting in person, these places are the personality of our high streets and set one town apart from another!  It is such a refreshing change and so lovely being able to hop on over to her blog to find smaller businesses to support rather than just buying from big chain stores!

Some of Millie’s favorite posts that she has written are

I am a twin, I have a degree in fashion buying and merchandising and I love working people within my local area!

You can find Millie over on Instagram – @lovedbymilliex  or you can email her on lovedbymilliex@outlook.com

  • Diary, Planner and Journal Review  I really enjoy seeing how my planning style evolves, what works, what doesn’t and all the bits in between!  I am sure I always say that I have found what works for me and by the next post about my planners and planning style I have gone and changed it again!
  • The Bloggers Bash Review  What can I say?  It was a fabulous day of learning, listening, and networking and in this post, I tell you all about my favorite parts of the day!
  • Garden Update  I never really thought I was a “gardening” sort of person but it turns out that gardening is something I really enjoy.  I had been talking A LOT about gardening in other posts so thought it would be nice to share with you what I have done and my plans for the future!  It will be interesting to look back on this post in years to come and see how much my garden has changed!
  • House Plants  I really believe that the addition of house plants to any area can really change the atmosphere of that space, they add a calming influence, not to mention that they can be beneficial to our health.  I loved sharing my plants in this post.
  • 1 Year In My Home!!!!  I think that this is definitely a milestone worth not just recording but for celebrating too!  I’ve never really lived on my own before and having been in my home for a year is worth blogging about!

3 Things About Yourself!

When I was younger I had an imaginary friend called George, one day we had an argument when travelling home from the beach, we were driving over the Severn Bridge at the time. I wound down the car window and threw him out and into the river from the moving car, and that was the end of my imaginary friend.

When people meet my brother and I they always assume that he’s the oldest but in truth he’s 27 months younger than me!

Since starting this blog I am amazed daily by how much I really enjoy writing and creating content, thinking and planning and am a little bit proud of where my blog has come in such a small amount of time.

Rory’s Five Questions

Which is your least favourite mode of transportation?

I don’t think I have a least favourite mode of transport, though the short distance busses that transport people around the local area were never particularly pleasant at one point and I’m really glad that I can drive rather than rely on them!

Why, oh why why why did the chicken cross the road?

He didn’t like the path he was on.

What is the stupidist thing you have ever done – voluntarily?

Used de-icer on the inside window screen of my VW Polo to defrost the window. It used to leak in the rain and come winter the condensation would freeze to the inside of the screen and it took agars to clear. The de-icer ran down into the air vents which, when turned on, turned the de-icer to vapour which I breathed in…. please don’t try that at home kids….

When you have left this planet, as in your life ends, what do you think is next ….?

I don’t know if anyone has seen The Good Place but… well, that. I’m sure I’d be Eleanor Shellstrop!

At what age do you think you actually became an adult?

Ummmmmmm…I’m still waiting to find that one out myself… the answer is a mystery!

My Five Questions

What is the biggest lesson you have learned in your time blogging?

If you could travel to any planet which one would it be and how would you get there?

Do you ever give your cars (or other transportation) names?

What’s your weirdest habit?

What are your 3 desert island must haves?

New Blog Series – Words on Wednesday

img_5011

I am always thinking about things; ideas that I have, thoughts, conversations, comments, opinions, annoyances, observations, the list goes on…,  and sometimes I think that I would like to share these things over my blog, but never really do as they either don’t fit into any of my blog categories, are something that is pretty current and my schedule is full or they are things that don’t warrant a full blog post dedicated to them.  This is where my new series, Words on Wednesday will fit.  Each Wednesday there will be a post called “Words on Wednesday” which will be a post about, well, anything, I am letting myself be led by my thoughts and see what happens when I have a free thinking space in which to air my views, thoughts, and goodness knows what else that may flow from my brain to my fingertips and onto this screen…we shall see what happens and where this takes me!

So, if you are interested, Words on Wednesday will be starting here on Wednesday next week!

How to Bullet Journal

img_4981

I have been using a bullet journal on and off for years now, some of them have been really creative while others have been more functional.  I have now settled into a style that works for me, it’s a mix of creative and functional with the most creative aspect of my journal being the page I dedicate to the month title.

I have never been one for following rules, and the traditional Bullet Journal Method of rapid logging doesn’t really appeal to me so I tend to borrow ideas from diaries and mish-mash them with things that I need in order to function on a day to day basis.

I wanted to share with you my tips and tricks I have learned along the way and how I bullet journal so today’s post is dedicated to this.

First up, let’s talk about the actual “journal”.  I want to start by saying that you really do not need to buy any kind of brand journal, any kind of notebook will do.  It doesn’t matter if the pages are lined, blank, dotted, graph or grid, whatever tickles your fancy will do nicely!  My personal preference is for a dotted grid that isn’t too dark.  Brand-wise, you can go with any, I have used cheap books from Amazon (which have no brand name), cheap notebooks from the supermarket, Lechtturm 1917, Scribbles That Matter, Flying Tiger and one that I picked up in my local TK Maxx.  The brand really does not matter, it’s what you make it be that counts!

Tools

You may have seen people on social media and blogs talking about this pen, that pencil, this washi, those stickers and a whole other myriad of “essential” stationery needs for your bullet journal.  My advice… disregard all that you have read.  Here’s a list of tools you will need.

  • Your favorite pen, ink color of your preference.
  • A graphite pencil.  Any kind will do.
  • A ruler or straight edge.
  • A few other pens in different colors, gel or fine liners work really well as do ball pens.
  • Eraser, accept that you will make mistakes, an eraser will help to remove most.
  • Post-it notes.

Now, before you even start on creating your journal, sit down with a pen and a piece of paper and write down a list of things you want your journal to have and what you want to use that journal for.  Each person has a different list of wants and needs and reasons to use a journal.

The main thing that is needed in a journal is diary space for logging things.  This can take up several different formats depending on what you want to use the journal for.

  • Future log – an overview of several months that you can add information such as Birthdays and other Occasions in little detail.  Usually, this will take up 2 or more pages.
  • Monthly overview – a page dedicated to just one month where you can log upcoming appointments in a bit more detail.
  • Weekly log – this can cover one page or 2 depending on the amount of detail you want to add to each day.
  • Daily log – a page dedicated to each day, where you have the whole page to use for recording things.

Basic Set Up

The next thing to decide is whether you want a divider page between each month.  Once you have answered that question you can then move on to thinking about the running order of your journal.  My personal preference is

  1. Future Log over 4 pages (title on the facing page then on the double page 8 months, and on the reverse another 4 months).
  2. Monthly title page on the next available facing page.
  3. Monthly overview on the reverse of the monthly title page.
  4. Weekly pages for the month over a double page.
  5. Repeat 2-4.

This is your basic set up.

There are so many ways to set up your weekly pages, columns, rows, squares, rectangles…a peek at Instagram will show you so many different ways.  Decide which layout is best for you. I find that rows and rectangles work best for me and alternate between the two every month.

Other Pages to Consider

Some people like to add a Key to their journal, a page of symbols or color coding that correlates to certain items in their journal, it is useful to add this to the beginning of your journal if you want to use one.  There may be other requirements you have for your journal, like shopping lists, trackers and other things.  Some pages you may wish to insert into your basic set up are

  • Trackers.  There are so many different things you may want to track, water intake, medication, sleep, steps, exercise.
  • Shopping lists.
  • Notes.
  • Checklists.
  • Projects.
  • Ideas.
  • Thoughts.
  • Daily/weekly/monthly reflections.

You can add these things in between your daily/weekly pages or at the beginning or end of the month, or you can have a whole section dedicated just to these kinds of pages. There is no wrong or right way when it comes to placement, remember it is your journal.

Making a Start

I like to start by opening a new Excel spreadsheet, in the first column I make a list of each page number (the amount will depend on how many pages are available in your chosen journal).  In the following column, I start to map out how I want my pages to flow, from my Future Log onwards and listing each page as if I were flicking through it.  This step gives me an idea of how many pages I will use and helps me to work out how many pages will be used and for what.  You don’t really need to use this step if you don’t want to.

I then map out in my journal the first few pages, firstly using post-it notes labeled with the title of the page or the date range those pages will cover so that I can get a feel for how the layout will be.  Again this is an optional step but helps me to make fewer mistakes or miss things out.

Creating Your Pages

Now is time to put pencil to paper and map out your pages.  Always, always, always start with a pencil!  Any mistakes you make can easily be corrected, and once you are happy with the way things look you can then commit to your design with a pen, trust me on this…I’ve messed up a ton and pencil is so much easier to rectify!

You can make your pages as intricate or as plain as you want, play around and have fun creating something that is useful and will be used by you!  Use as many or as few colors as you want, be minimal with your designs, be maximal, whatever you fancy!

Collections

I don’t really use collections but I thought it may be useful to mention here.  Collections are series’ of pages that log certain things.  collections can be lists of books to be read, films to watch, bucket lists, travel lists, packing lists, cleaning lists, and rotas… this kind of page is normally placed towards the back of your journal.

Bullet Journal Terms

Here’s a list of terms and definitions that may be useful

  • Future log – Overview of the yea
  • Monthly log – Overview of the current month
  • 2 Page Spread – usually a layout which spans 2 pages, normally a left hand and right-hand page.
  • Key – a series of symbols or colors that are assigned to certain events or tasks.
  • Week to a page – a week that is contained to just one page of your journal.
  • Week on 2 pages –  a weekly layout spread over 2 pages.
  • Tracker – a little infographic for you to capture information on whatever you want to track.

I hope you found this post useful.  Do you currently use a bullet journal?  What are your most useful pages?  If you don’t use a bullet journal, what would you use one for?

Monthly Goals – July

img_4960

I decided at the beginning of the year that I would not make any Resolutions or yearly goals but, rather, make monthly ones that were more easily obtainable, you can find all my Monthly Goal posts here.

Today I am looking at the goals I set myself last month and whether I achieved them and setting myself goals for July.

Here are last month’s goals and whether I managed them!

Blog and Social Media

  • Update Media Kit.
  •   I have been making more of an effort to comment on Instagram more but have not really made an effort with Twitter yet.  This is something that I want to work on more this month.
  • Share more unique content on Social Media Channels. I have added a few more things to Instagram that are “unique” to that platform but I want to start making more of an effort to add content that is not always blog orientated on both Instagram and Twitter.  I think that this goal and the above goal are things that I really need to start getting used to and are not in my comfort zone at the moment, they will take effort but hopefully, this effort will become routine after a while.
  • Advertise for Saturday Shout Out in a better way.  I’ve not yet figured out a better way to advertise for my Saturday Shout Out section yet, currently, I advertise through my blog, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram, however, I’m pretty sure there is a more effective way of advertising this.

Home

  • Paint kitchen.  I have still not gotten around to this yet.  The time I had planned on doing this, over the course of a few days, was a time that I came down with a sickness bug.  I’m now hoping to schedule some time in to get it done this month.
  • Sort shelves in the bedroom wardrobe.  I’ve not done this, partly because the weather, which has been cold and rainy one day and hot the next, has meant that I have been switching between jumpers, long-sleeved tops, and vest tops and partly because I have been thinking of how to organize my clothes more effectively.  I have now bought some storage baskets that I think will be perfect for the job so will make time this month to get the wardrobe shelves sorted.
  • Plan Barbecue for 1 year house anniversary.  I decided not to hold a barbecue as I had not been too well coming up to the anniversary but am now considering having a barbecue and celebration as part of my Mind Crafternoon this month.
  • Sand down pallets and decide whether to varnish, wax or cover them to make a bed base.  I decided against starting this project until I have decided what I am doing with my current bed base.  I have decided that I will use my current mattress though and that I am going to cover the pallets with some kind of carpet so sanding down the pallets doesn’t really need to be done.

Arts, Crafts, Hobbies, and Interests

  • Create a wildflower bed in the garden.  I did this!  You can find out what I did and see some pictures in this post.
  • Plant peas and beans.  I didn’t get this done as we had some really heavy rain and not the best weather this past month.  I was worried that as the plants started to grow that the weather would damage them.  Now the weather is improving I am going to sow the seeds in the next few days.  I’m hoping that I haven’t left it too late though.
  • Plant Sweet Peas.  I didn’t sow these either for the same reasons as above.  I’m not sure whether I have now missed the sowing season and need to do some reading around whether it is worth sowing these now or waiting until next year.
  • Decide where to place rose and lavender and plant.   I have planted out my lavender and have plans of where to plant my rose bush so I’d say that this goal has been achieved mostly!
  • Plan food and finalize activities for my Mind Crafternoon.  I now have concrete plans for the activities for my Crafternoon and am considering having a barbecue later in the afternoon, serving salad and snacks alongside burgers and other barbecue foods!

Personal

  • Work on book notes.  I have made a few more notes for my book but I feel that I have not made as much progress as I wanted too.  That being said, any progress is good progress, right?
  • Read another book.  I have finished reading 2 books this month, one of them I reviewed in this post.
  • Meal plan for work lunches.  I did a rough meal plan for my work lunches but seemed to stick to sandwiches a lot, though I did make myself some pasta dishes that I had for lunch too.
  • Plan and pack for Bloggers Bash.  This was something that I had to do in order to travel to London, but my main goal with this was to pack in a more thoughtful way and carry less with me.  I ended up using a smaller bag which in turn led me to think about the things I needed and I did end up with a lighter, smaller bag and less to carry around with me!
  • Work on ‘time’ schedule.  I have been experimenting with how I utilize my time and am working out the best schedule for me.  At the moment I am finding that having specific days for specific tasks seems to be working pretty well and I am going to see how that pans out over the next week or so before committing to it.

I feel that this month, while I have managed to achieve goals in some areas, I have fallen short in others but I have valid reasons so am not too disappointed in myself, and there is always this month to work on those things too.

My Goals for July

Blog and Social Media

  • Re-design all my header graphics and social media graphics.  I have an idea of where I want to go with my graphics and want to make them more cohesive and identifiable as my brand.
  • Work on Blog Awards.  I have been lucky enough to have been gifted a few more awards and am planning on working on these this month!
  • Find more bloggers to take part in my Saturday Shout Out slot!  I have a few spaces left for July and it would be nice to have those filled up, written and scheduled soon!

Home

  • Clean the house and prepare for my Mind Crafternoon.  I want to have everywhere looking its best for my guests on the day so I’m planning on getting my carpets cleaned, doing some dusting and scrubbing everywhere until it sparkles!
  • Take some recycling to the tip.  I have a lot of cardboard that needs to go, and while we have a cardboard collection scheme I have managed to miss it for a few weeks so it has accumulated and would be easier for me to take to the recycling point at the local tip rather than wait another week.
  • Mow the lawn.  I really need to do this if I am going to host a barbecue later in the month!

Arts, Crafts, Hobbies, and Interests

  • Get all the craft things together that I will need for my Mind Crafternoon.  The sooner I get this bit done the better as Its one less thing that I will need to think about!
  • Get the invites for my Mind Crafternoon sent out.
  • Dig my other flower bed and get my rose bush planted.

Personal

  • Read 2 books this month.
  • Drink more water.
  • Be more mindful of what I’m eating and try to make better food choices.
  • Try to get to bed early at least 2 nights week.

That’s all my goals for the month! What goals do you have for June? I’d love to hear what your plans and ideas are in the comments!

Recipe of the Month – July

img_4938

Ice lollies are one of my all-time favorite summer treats and making your own is a brilliant way to use up fruit and juices that may otherwise go to waste.  It is an activity that can be fun for kids to take part in and a fab way to get more fruit into your day to day diet too.

Equipment

  • Ice lolly molds.  You can buy these from many supermarkets now, Asda and Tesco both stock them instore, Amazon has many different ones available too.  I bought mine from my local Lidl store.
  • Blender or liquidizer.
  • Fork, spoon.
  • Measuring jug.
  • Freezer.

Ingredients

  • Soft fruits such as peaches, nectarines, berries, melon, mango, kiwi, banana…
  • Alternatively, you could use frozen smoothie mix.
  • Fruit juice such as orange or apple, or lemonade.

Method

  • Work out the capacity of the molds by filling with water and then emptying into a measuring jug.  Mine hold around 250mls of liquid.
  • Clean and prepare the fruit, or if using frozen smoothie mix, remove from the freezer for around 20 mins to soften before using.
  • You can choose to either use the fruits in small chunks or blend with a little bit of juice or lemonade.
  • If using chunks of fruit, add to the molds and fill with your choice of liquid before placing the sticks into the mold.
  • If using liquidized fruits, carefully spoon the mixture into the molds and place the sticks in.
  • Place in the freezer for a few hours to solidify.
  • When removing, it may be easier to run the molds under a hot tap to ease the lollies out.
  • Sit back and enjoy your cooling creations.

In the picture, above, I used raspberries and lemonade for the clear lollies, and frozen smoothie mix and orange juice for the orange lolly.

Ideas to try…

  • Milkshakes.
  • Mint, strawberry, and lemonade.
  • Kiwi and pineapple chunks.
  • Grape and melon with apple juice.
  • Mashed banana and milk.
  • Tropical fruit smoothie and apple juice.

What sort of lollies would you make?  let me know in the comments!!!
