Asperger’s and Me

I have Aspergers, or as some would say “high functioning autism”, though I hate the “high functioning” part.  If you have flu, it’s neither described as “mild flu” or “heavy flu” or anything like that, it’s just the flu.  So I have Aspergers, or autism.

Asperger syndrome (AS), also known as Asperger’s, is a developmental disorder characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests.” (Wikipedia)

I was diagnosed back in the autumn of 2017 though I had an idea way before that, back in 2015, that I had Asperger’s.  It was a relief to get my diagnosis, I finally knew that I wasn’t the weird kid obsessed with art and stationery who was easily overwhelmed by things.  And neither was I the loner that was forever seeking acceptance from the other kids at school.

This presents several issues to me – I have a difficulty in verbalizing things and often have no idea what to say, sometimes what I do say can be classed as inappropriate.  I get overwhelmed by certain things, like certain noises or tones of noise and it can be difficult for me to follow a conversation in noisy atmospheres.  I have difficulty processing things like feelings and can bottle things up until I erupt.  I don’t handle stress particularly well, and can get stressed out pretty easily in certain situations.  I have a hard time concentrating if there is too much noise or other triggering factors.  I don’t like being interrupted when I am working on something as I like to focus fully on that and that alone, this means it can be hard for me to switch my focus to something else and then return to what I was doing before.  I talk too much about the same subjects, usually something I’m super interested in which can mean that I monopolise conversations.  I have a hard time deciphering what people can mean and need people to be really clear in what they say.

But, it’s not all bad…. I love arts and crafts and am really creative.  I do something with a high degree of attention and focus and have an eye for details which others may have missed.  When I set my mind to something I will work hard at it.  I’m a really fast learner, probably because I enjoy learning.  I love researching topics and knowing the ins and outs, whys and whats of subjects and will read every book or article about that topic too.  I have a BA (Hons) in Photographic Art and have a job.

Aspergers is just me, or I am just Aspergers and it is part of me.  I don’t really think about the fact that I have it, to me it is just part of my personality.

What’s In My Bag?

Happy

Today I’m sharing with you the things that I carry around with me in my bag on a day-to-day basis.  I believe that a lot can be learned about a person and the content of their bag, plus I thought it would be fun to share the content of my bag.  I may make this into a quarterly post as it may be interesting to see if what is in my bag changes from season to season or from bag to bag, what do you think?

Happy

My bag is from Artsac.  I bought it a few months ago, at the end of January along with another bag (which I wrote about here).  Despite that the bag is nylon it has been my go to bag since I purchased it, originally I didn’t want a bag that was nylon as I was worried about how long it would last and how it would wear but I’m pleased to report that it’s not showing any marks or scuffs at all!  What has surprised me is how much I can fit into it and still have room for more!  There are 2 main zip compartments that span the width of the bag and are accessible from the top, one has 2 little slip pockets inside it, the other has a small, zipped pocket which has a square, red Artsac label stitched to it.  At the back of the bag there is a zipped pocket that runs the length of the bag and would accommodate important documents.  At the front of the bag is a flap that has 2 zippered compartments, the right side pocket has Artsac branding in the form of a colour coordinated rubber square on it.  Under the flap is another zippered section that is about an inch shorter than the height of the bag but runs the full length.

First is a look into what I keep in the 2 main zippered compartments…

In the back main compartment is my kindle.  In the other main compartment I have my Filofax Malden, my Kate Spade pencil-case, a Minions Moleskine notebook, and my Bright Side blog and social media planner.

The front flap pockets usually hold my business card holder and my entry fob for work (not shown).

Front flap pockets

In the compartment under the flap top I keep my purse, lipsticks, lip balm, perfume, a pouch with gemstones in it (currently moonstone, blue lace agate, rose quartz and hematite), hand warmers and a lip crayon.  Not shown are my mobile which I was using to take these photos, or my house or car keys.

Front compartment

I don’t tend to use the pocket across the back of the bag very much though I find it useful for letters that need sending, any important info I need with me for the day and for keeping my repeat prescription in before I take it to the pharmacy.  I also don’t really use the inside slip pockets that much, or the zipped inside pocket though they are useful for putting tissues in or my trolley token when I am planning to go shopping.

At the beginning of this post I said that I believed a lot could be learned about a person and the contents of their bag, what do you think you have learned about me?  What could be learned about the contents of your bag?

Book Review – An Orphan’s War – Molly Green

Untitled design

This is the second book that I read from my purchase of A Box Of Stories box and I chose it because the description intrigued me.

“LIVERPOOL, 1940.  When her childhood sweetheart is killed in action, Maxine Grey loses more than her husband – she loses her best friend.  desperate to make a difference in this awful war, she takes a nursing job at London’s St Thomas’ Hospital.

A BROKEN HEART.  Maxine takes comfort in the attentions of a handsome surgeon, but Edwin Blake might not be all he seems.  As the Blitz descends on the capital, Maxine returns to Liverpool heartbroken and surrounded by the threat of scandal.

A BRAVE SPIRIT.  When offered a job at a Dr Barnardo’s orphanage, Maxine hopes this is the second chance she has been looking for.  And one little boy in particular helps her to realise that she needs the orphans just as much as they need her.”

I don’t usually read books that are set in the past and tend to skip past them on the shelf, preferring to reach for books that are set in the present day so this book isn’t one that I would usually reach for.  That said, the back of the book really made me want to sit and read it, regardless of the time period setting.

This book covers topics of love, loss, friendship, starting over and overcoming problems that were frowned upon in that time.  From the first page I was hooked and, snuggled up with my dog, Roxy, a blanket and a cafetière of coffee I read most of this book in one afternoon.  So many of the themes running through the book are relevant to the struggles we face today with family and the relationships within the family being first and foremost.

I really liked the way that Molly Green painted pictures with words, you could really imagine the scenes that Maxine, the main character, was confronted with, the way the relationships between Maxine and other characters developed through the book and the way the different characters individual stories were interwoven with each other.  The story itself was really beautifully written and I loved every minute of it.  The only down side, for me, was that the story seemed to finish a little abruptly, I would have liked to know more about what happens next…but maybe that is the best way to end a book?

Have you read this book or any others by Molly Green?  What did you think of the book?
